Hey. What kind of party is this? There's no booze and only one hooker.
In the past couple of years, I have tried to actively engage in conversations and topics regarding race that I don't necessarily find easy with other non-white people/PoCs and white people. What I have found lacking in my own behaviour and one of the things that troubles me about my own posts/thoughts about race is that they tend to be, although not always, reactive instead of proactive. I've made posts in the past about how race discussions are so very rarely centred on non-white people/PoC but I don't think I've done enough to help make an environment and space for conversations that I want in my own online and fandom experience. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately, taking on board a lot of advice that I've received from other PoC (especially zvi and Delux) over the past two years and I am making an effort to try create a little space and opportunity for the dialogue I want to have, the voices I very much want to hear.

There are many good PoC projects and carnivals which do concentrate on topics and conversations held for and by non-white people/PoC such as International Blog Against Racism Week, the PoC in SF Carnival, Women of Colour and Beauty Carnival, Tell it WoC speak Carnival and I found the recent Remyth Project especially inspiring. There isn't, as far as I know, a carnival that focuses on Asian women. And instead of hoping and waiting for someone else to do the legwork so that I can read more about a subject that matters to me, I thought I would take a leaf out of Oyceter & the ibarw mods, Willow, Delux, Yeloson and Renee's books and pony up and start things rolling in my little corner of the internet. (I am new to this and I expect that I will be muddling through so if you have any suggestions or advice, please drop me a line!)

Call for Submissions

Anyway, after this long winded introduction, I'm pleased to announce a call for submissions for the first Asian Women Blog Carnival as well as suggestions for themes and hosts for possible future carnivals. I hope that there will be enough interest for us to continue this, monthly or bimonthly or quarterly so please do let me know if you are interested in hosting a future Asian women carnival with (or without!) a specific theme in mind.

This carnival is intended to focus on Asian women. The definition of Asian, within the scope of this carnival, includes people from East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, North Asia, South-East Asia, Far East, Middle East, Near East and people of Asian descent living in non-Asian countries. The definition of women, within the scope of this carnival, includes transwomen and cisgendered women.

For the first edition, which I will be hosting at yennenga thanks to delux_vivens's kind offer, there is no specific theme. I would like to highlight the diversity of Asian women and topics regarding identity in Asian majority and Asian minority cultures. Submissions can range from feminism, representation, culture, history, work, activism, beauty, health, sexuality, politics, economics, philosophy, class, education, religion, how we identify and relate to other PoC groups, personal stories etc.

Please feel free to submit your own posts or suggest good posts or links by someone else for this carnival. This carnival is not livejournal specific, please feel free to participate from other journalling sites and blogs. You may submit multiple posts. Submissions from from women and men of colour as well as allies are welcome.

All types of work, such as essays, prose, poems, personal narratives are accepted.

I'd kinda love to participate, but I'm bad at thinking deep thoughts about my racial identity. My Mum is Asian (Kyrgyz), but my Dad is Finnish, and since I inherited Dad's genes (pale skin, blue yes, the whole nine yards), and because Mum hasn't clung all that hard to her own roots (mostly because she lived in Kyrgyzstan during the soviet union era), I tend to identify as white. My sister inherited more of my Mum's exotic looks, but as far as I know, she doesn't really identify herself as being half-Asian either. I should talk to her about it one day...

I suppose it would be fair to say that when I do contemplate on my heritage, I start feeling like I'm a white person with an underlying Asian identity that's somehow very *false*. I'm white, and while racism is an issue that makes me see red, I sometimes feel guilty about the fact that I don't feel the personal connection? I don't know. I suppose I'm lucky in that I avoided the identity crisis I might've had, living in a Finnish culture with half-Asian looks?

Sorry, I realise this post wasn't meant as a venting place, it just got me thinking.
you have the boldness of a much younger womanciderpress on February 23rd, 2009 11:59 pm (UTC)
I think that engagement and thinky thoughts are part circumstance and part intent. There is no one who knows better than you how much you want to explore and engage in and how your own experiences have shaped and will shape your life and really, it's up to you how you make your choices to be comfortable in yourself and explore what you think is meaningful about you. Does that make sense?

(As an aside, I'm uncomfortable with this kind of language and I'm going to ask you not to refer to Asian looks as "exotic" in my journal without quotation marks or some acknowledgement that it's a generally problematic trope in the representation of Asian women in many, if not all, Western cultures. I think you will understand where I'm coming from with this? Thanks!)

I don't know if the blog carnival allows sort-of-rants?

But I had written a ranty piece here before, just wondering if that counts, especially since it's a sort of result of the Avatar casting mess, and my own frustrations with studying/living in a mostly white country from having grown up in a SEAsian country. >.>;;
you have the boldness of a much younger womanciderpress on February 24th, 2009 11:02 am (UTC)
Thank you for linking your piece, I've bookmarked it!

The best meta is sort-of-rants, I think! And the Avatar casting mess has pushed a lot of buttons in many people, I'm glad that it has made so many people so eloquent.

Hi, your project looks interesting. But... what is a carnival?
And, I notice there's a deadline. Does this mean that you release all the submissions at once?
you have the boldness of a much younger womanciderpress on February 25th, 2009 09:31 am (UTC)

But basically, yes, people write posts or submit posts they've already written and at the end of the deadline, I'll collect them and write a post with links and a little editorial.

Feels funny to read this. I am a minority, as a white American living in Asia, even more as a Jewish one. But I don't think my viewpoint is what you want here and I don't want to be 'those white people, trying to make it all about them', however salubrious the experience of being a minority might be. I may mention it to a colleague or two, though, and will mention it to a few others of my acquaintance.

This is made of lots of win! I look forward to what comes of it. I still haven't acquired the words to better express my identity in terms of a global race, but I think I'm slowly starting to figure out what those words are. This is a good start, a good resource, though. :) I hope that this is very successful!

Brilliant!
Hi! This is such a great idea! I've been wanting to contribute to a carnival for ages but for some reason keep missing the deadline. I've a fairly recent article below about my own personal experience with orientalism. I write quite a lot about it, thinking I know the subject a fair bit but still get a little shocked by real people who 'practice' it.
